Injury news lifts Spurs star

Tottenham have been boosted by the news that the injury to attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen is not as bad as first feared.

Christian Eriksen: Tottenham attacking midfielder has an ankle sprain

The 21-year-old sustained some damage to his ankle during the friendly between Denmark and Norway last Friday.

Spurs had initially feared Eriksen would be out of action for around three months, but an MRI scan has revealed the former Ajax star has a sprain.

A statement from Tottenham on social media read: "After an MRI scan it's been determined that Christian Eriksen suffered a sprain of the lateral ankle ligaments playing for Denmark on Friday.

"Christian's scan showed no sign of ruptured ligaments which will result in a shorter period of recovery for the attacking midfielder."

Eriksen has made an impressive start to his career at White Hart Lane following his summer arrival from Ajax for around £11m and should be back in action in around four weeks.

The creative midfielder shone on his debut against Norwich in September and he scored in the following fixture against Tromso in the Europa League.

He then lost his place in the team to Lewis Holtby following a dip in form, but returned to the starting XI for Spurs' last game against Newcastle.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has plenty of players who can fill Eriksen's number 10 role while he is out.

Holtby, Erik Lamela, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Harry Kane can play in that position while Villas-Boas also has the option of altering his formation to allow two strikers to play up front, rather than one.
