Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul is targeting a top-10 Premier League finish after the Magpies ended their "unacceptable" run of four straight defeats.

Tim Krul: Believes Newcastle can quickly climb the Premier League table

Alan Pardew's side surpassed all expectations when they finished fifth in the top-flight last term to earn European football.

But they have failed to reach the same heights so far this season and are currently 14th after just four wins from their opening 15 games.

A 3-0 home win against Wigan eased some of the pressure and now Krul believes Newcastle can start climbing the table.

"We want top 10 and just take it from there," the Dutchman. "Who knows what we can achieve?

"We're not far away from the top end of the table.

"The league is quite tight this year and a few wins puts you right back up there and keeps everyone at rest a little bit."

Defeats against West Ham, Swansea, Southampton and Stoke left the Magpies hovering dangerously above the relegation zone before Monday's success against the Latics.

Krul admits his team realised it would be difficult to replicate last season's Premier League success, especially with Europa League matches added to their fixture list.

But he still believes they can enjoy a successful campaign and reach the latter stages of the cup competitions.

"If we can just get the confidence back then who knows?" he told The Journal.

"We're in the next round in Europe, we have the FA Cup to look forward to and the league, hopefully we can climb up the league as soon as possible."
