Pardew takes the positives

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was encouraged by his side's performance in the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham even though they failed to pick up any points.

Pardew's new signings once again impressed with Yoan Gouffran scoring the Magpies' goal in between Gareth Bale's double for Spurs.

"They started really fast, but after that we dug in and played some good stuff," said Pardew.

"It was an even game really other than after that second goal which opened it up.

"I was pleased with the performance but not the result. We should be all right now."

The only negative was a shin injury suffered by Gouffran, although X-rays later revealed there was no break and he will undergo further tests in the next few days.

"His shinbone looks sore. It's fingers crossed," Pardew said. "We don't want to lose him, he's only just come to the club."

Pardew admitted Bale had been the difference in a match that had been closely-fought before his 78th-minute winner.

"He's difficult to contain. We tied him down in certain areas but he's always going to get some freedom. He was electric," he said.

"The first goal was class. We should have done better for the second."

t's why Mourinho is so successful. He gives players a specific, limited set of functions to perform. They are but a cog in a machine. Do no more, do no less. I assume he learnt it from LvG :)

really hope that someone in the mainstream media spots that the Bayern manager played for and managed Barcelona quite well, and thinks to mention it in the build up. That would be really interesting.
