Europa success thrills Pardew

Manager Alan Pardew is confident his Newcastle side can progress even further in the Europa League after Thursday's narrow victory over Metalist Kharkiv.

@mccabecol, you're right, we were. However we didn't manage to score in normal time (at least not given goals), and only got through thanks to a penalty that on watching the replays I'd argue was 'soft' in the extreme. Goryainov got his foot to the ball, and given his position I don't think it was reckless but Sissoko went down. Not sure there's even contact. Luck was a big factor over those two matches, both good and bad.

I don't see how going into the return leg at 0-0, when you should be 2-0 up is "lucky".

Well I'm pleased. It's an interesting competition because you don't really know how good any of the teams are at this point, and I wouldn't say there is a clear favourite in the competition. I know Anzhi gave Liverpool a bit of trouble so I expect it to be tight. Guess we'll see what happens, I've no idea what to expect to be honest with you.
