Gregory van der Wiel: Enjoying life in the French capital

The Holland international had no shortage of options to consider last summer as he planned a move away from Ajax.

A transfer to England was mooted at one stage, with Newcastle leading the hunt for his signature.

Van der Wiel was, however, reluctant to try his luck on Tyneside and held out for a switch to France.

With PSG currently topping the Ligue 1 table and readying themselves for a quarter-final showdown with Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League, the 25-year-old full-back believes he made the right call.

"I love it in Paris," said Van der Wiel.

"I had the chance to go to Newcastle but I didn't want to live in a place like that. I prefer Paris - everything is trendy and alive."

Van der Wiel is also relishing the opportunity to play alongside one of his boyhood idols in the form of David Beckham.

On the former England captain, he said: "When David entered the dressing room here for the first time, all the players looked at him.

"As young kids, we had all admired him. I admit I did too. As a little boy, he was my hero. When you see the way he talks to the players, his positive attitude, his calm nature, his effort to help every player at the club. He is a fantastic pro and person for everyone at PSG."

hould have stayed because we carried him for 6.5 years. And then he has a breakthrough season, and was gone soon after. MU fans, you would be as disgusted had C Ronaldo left in 2007 and not 2009.

ood grief. Someone guessed that the form English player at the moment might be in his national side with some other players? And that's espionage? Now if they discovered that Emile Heskey was going to be in the starting line up.... at right back.... THAT would be espionage. Give it a rest Roy.
