Alan Pardew: 'We just need to get ourselves in a good position'

Pardew accepts his side face an uphill task to make it to the last four of the Europa League after the 3-1 defeat in the first leg in Lisbon last week, but insists all is not lost.

He told the Chronicle: "We just need to get ourselves in a good position. If we can get a goal with 20 minutes to go, we can do it - that's the agenda for me.

"Our fans need to understand that if we go gung-ho looking for two quick goals, we are just going to get killed.

"They have got real quality on the break. We have got to be very intelligent and we have got to be patient."

When asked if he feared the players might be distracted by the Tyne-Wear derby this weekend, Pardew added: "Sunday takes care of itself. We know what it's about."

f I were Manuel Pellegrini I would keep quiet and hope the Board didn't notice City not winning anything. If he isn't sacked I'd be astonished.
