The 22-year-old, who was born in north London, will appear in court in August, following an investigation by Northumbria Police.

The force said in a statement: "A rape was reported to police on Thursday 24 January, 2013, and relates to an incident which happened in the early hours of Wednesday 23 January at a hotel in Jesmond.

"Nile Ranger, 22, of Bailey Close, Harringay, London, has been charged with rape. He is due to appear before Newcastle Magistrates' Court on 21 August."

The former England Under-19 international made over 50 appearances for Newcastle, many of them as a substitute, and is currently a free agent after he was released by the Magpies in March.
