Dan Gosling: Getting his head down at Newcastle after seeing Crystal Palace move

The Magpies were prepared to let the versatile 23-year-old move on this summer, but a proposed switch to Premier League new boys Crystal Palace never materialised.

That has left Gosling still on the books at St James' Park and looking to prove his worth to Alan Pardew during pre-season friendly outings.

A switch could still be put in place before the current transfer window slams shut, but Gosling says he is trying to stay focused on the present and let events outside of his control take care of themselves.

On seeing a switch to Palace collapse and remaining part of the set-up at Newcastle, Gosling told the Shields Gazette: "It was nearly there. But it didn't materialise, so I came back here and got my head down, worked hard and have played two games. I'll just play as many games as I can and we'll see what happens.

"It was difficult, but it affects people differently. I just get on with my job. I'm employed by Newcastle United, and it was no bother for me to come back. I'll just get my head down and get on with my work."

Gosling concedes that he needs to be playing regularly after three injury-ravaged years on Tyneside, but is reluctant to speculate on where he might get those games.

He added: "I was always happy to be here, and I'm happy to stay, but I need to play football. That's what I'm paid to do, and I haven't been doing that.

"Whether it is (time) to move on, or whatever, who knows? I just want to play football, whether it's here or somewhere else."
