Alan Pardew: Insists Newcastle have a strong squad

Furious fans took to social media to denounce owner Mike Ashley, controversially-appointed director of football Joe Kinnear and Pardew himself after Monday night's deadline passed without the Magpies having signed a single senior player on a permanent deal.

But the manager, who had pleaded for attacking reinforcements during the final few days of the window, expressed his delight with the loan signing of striker Loic Remy and acknowledged Kinnear's ultimately unsuccessful attempts to bolster his squad.

In a statement issued by the club, Pardew said: "We are delighted to have brought Loic Remy to the club in this window and we believe he will form an exciting and effective partnership with Papiss Cisse.

"Joe has worked hard on numerous targets, particularly an additional offensive player.

"However some of the options that were available within our financial means were not as good as the players we already had and there is no point bringing in new players unless they can improve us and take us forward.

"We did the majority of our business in the January window, signing five excellent first team players.

"With the strong squad we have we should all approach the season in a positive, optimistic frame of mind."

Pardew's comments did little to placate supporters who have seen the club's rivals use the proceeds of the new broadcasting deal to invest heavily in their squads.

Newcastle, of course, had to do just that in January when they swooped for Mathieu Debuchy, Massadio Haidara, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Yoan Gouffran in a bid to avoid relegation - something they eventually achieved by the skin of their teeth - having failed to strengthen significantly last summer.

That, of course, was long before Kinnear's shock return to St James' Park, and his failure to make a breakthrough despite a series of bullish pronouncements has seen his stock fall even further.

et again Barcelona try to convince the world that they only play the most virtuous of football. I've never seen a team so willing and able to dish out lumps but feel so self-righteous that no opposition player should ever have the audacity to tackle them.

d love to see a United v Liverpool FA cup final. It would certainly fit the narrative. Obv I'd want the ending to be one of an O.G. and tears as he collects his runner-up medal.
