Tim Krul: Focused on winning his place back in the Dutch squad

The 25-year-old was dropped from Louis van Gaal's squad for Wednesday's friendly against France after conceding ten goals at domestic level as the Magpies slumped to three straight defeats.

But Newcastle have bounced back with successive wins over Aston Villa and Hull City - in which Krul made a fantastic double save to deny Alex Bruce early on - and the keeper is targeting more of the same as he bids to win back his place in the national squad ahead of this summer's finals.

Krul told The Journal: "I'll keep fighting to the end. I've got ten games left to show them that I'm ready and I think the manager knows what he gets from me.

"I'm going to do my best to show him that I should be on that plane to Brazil. He hasn't phoned to explain his decision, but I don't think the manager has to do that.

"We've had a bad month and I think we have to be honest about that. We have turned it around with two great wins and the only thing I can do now is impress in the next ten games.

"Another good run with Newcastle can help my chances of going to the World Cup, because of course the manager looks at that.

"He said in his press conference that some players have obviously had a bad couple of months and he would go from now. All I can do is look forward and try to get back into the squad."

Team performance

Krul praised the team performance at the KC Stadium on Saturday, which saw Luuk de Jong starting with Loic Remy up front for the first time, while in midfield - where the Magpies recently lost Yohan Cabaye to PSG - Cheick Tiote and Vurnon Anita did well.

The keeper added: "It was more than one player on Saturday.

"I think Luuk de Jong and Loic, that partnership is really starting to gel now and Vurnon and Cheick crafting and tackling was vital for us in the middle of the park.

"I'm really pleased with the way we played and hopefully it can continue. It's a bit frustrating we don't have a game next weekend, but we'll go away, work hard and come back fresh ready for Fulham."

The long-term future of on-loan QPR striker Remy is still undecided, with Krul believing the squad have done their best to make him feel at home.

"To be honest he is enjoying his time here and I think we make him feel at home, give him confidence and give him the right balls to score," said Krul.

"He's a fantastic striker, we've known from the start and I'm pleased he has been part of the squad this season and that's the only thing we can control at the moment."

till reckon Chelsea will go for Khedira as back up for Matic. I think it will turn out to be quite a Mourihno-y window: We'll see the squad players and youth in action pre-season, say things like well, we need not buy anybody and then the club will bid £60m for Pogba and send everybody on loan.

I

would love to be a fly on the wall at the meeting between Milner and Rodgers. I don't know if flies can count, but if they can then I would be counting the number of times Rodgers used the word outstanding in his attempts to get Milner to sign.

Reds and Arsenal chase Milner

W

ell, it wouldn't be a summer without Arsenal fans fretting over losing a key player, and United throwing their weight around and muscling in on transfer deals which are (apparently) near to completion. If we can't be entertained by the football on the pitch, let's enjoy the silly off-pitch soap opera of the transfer season. Hurrah!
