Mathieu Debuchy: Says Premier League football has improved him as a player

The 28-year-old made the switch to St James' Park from Lille in January 2013 and has established himself as a key part of Alan Pardew's plans, featuring 28 times in all competitions so far this season.

Prior to joining Pardew's side, Debuchy had spent 10 years in Ligue 1 with Lille and he says that English football has provided the step up that he required.

"You become better by playing and training with big players, and playing in the best league of course you will progress," he told the Evening Chronicle.

Debuchy is set for a summer trip to Brazil as part of France's World Cup squad, but with Newcastle still chasing a Europa League spot, he has not given up on achieving something domestically before the showpiece tournament.

"It is all to play for. You never know - you have to be ambitious," he said.

"With France the team has to look to get out of the group stage at the World Cup. We will have to play well and show our determination to qualify."

Meanwhile, Debuchy's team-mate for club and country, Moussa Sissoko, says he is enjoying his football after netting twice in last weekend's 4-1 win at Hull City.

"The team won the game so we are all very happy. We work hard together. We are playing very well and the game was very good," he said.

The win at the KC Stadium was somewhat overshadowed by Alan Pardew's touchline clash with Hull's David Meyler, but Sissoko refused to be drawn upon the incident.

"The most important thing is we won," he said. "We have more confidence and we need to work hard again for the last 10 games."

Speaking of his hopes of making Brazil, Sissoko added: "I will need to try to play very well and after that I need to help my team, to work very hard. Then maybe I can go to the World Cup."

I

m not sure about this distance covered malarky, plus that stat comes with *since February attached to it, that's just 1 month. I mean I have 27 open cases I'm 'working on' at the moment but believe me others with 10 cases work harder than I do. I just got back from a pub lunch, scampi and chips (+4 pints) in case you were wondering.
