With the likes of strike rivals David Villa, Fernando Torres, Roberto Soldado and Fernando Llorente not involved, Negredo made the most of his opportunity to show what he can do up front in Spain's last two World Cup qualifiers.

On Friday he scored the decisive goal in the 2-1 home win over Belarus and then on Tuesday night he netted the opener as reigning champions Spain defeated Georgia 2-0 to secure themselves a place in Brazil next year.

That was Negredo's fourth goal in his last five Spain appearances and he came close to adding to that tally several times against the Georgians, including a spectacular overhead kick which brought a fingertip save from visiting goalkeeper Giorgi Loria, as he enjoyed the chance to lead the line for La Roja.

"I'm very grateful for every minute I get on the pitch and I try to make the most of my chances. It's always important to do that and I hope I get many more," the Manchester City striker said in AS.

On the fight for a starting berth in attack for Spain, Negredo added: "We all come here fighting for the same objective, which is to play for our country and today I was lucky enough to play the entire game and score a goal."

Del Bosque, meanwhile, believes there is even more to come from the former Real Madrid and Sevilla striker.

He said following Tuesday's win in Albacete: "He still hasn't discovered his full potential."

Negredo could yet find himself with even more competition at national level with the possibility of Brazil-born Diego Costa being called up by Del Bosque.

Atletico Madrid striker Costa, who is the leading scorer in La Liga this season with 10 goals, is eligible to represent either Brazil or Spain but his international future remains in the air.

Del Bosque said of the 25-year-old: "We've already spoken with him, but we won't prevent him from playing for the country he wants to play for. He feels Spanish as well as Brazilian."

air play to the lad. I'd like to think I 'd have no fear of heading off to the other side of the world to coach, but in truth, I don't have the cajones. Hopefully he can make a decent living out of it.

was reticent with this signing, bringing our outlay on left backs to £50m + a Nani loan (and still paying his wages). However, if he's better than Pele then who am I to complain...
