The 28-year-old, who joined City in 2010, has 78 international caps to his name but was made to settle for a place on the bench in both of Spain’s warm-up wins over Bolivia and El Salvador respectively.

Silva enjoyed a successful season domestically, featuring 41 times in all competitions, as he helped City to Premier League and Capital One Cup glory, but he faces strong competition from the likes of Koke, Pedro, Cesc Fabregas and Juan Mata among others for a spot in the Spain starting line-up.

The playmaker suffered from numerous short-term injury problems throughout the campaign, but says that Pellegrini’s approach has helped to showcase his abilities since replacing Roberto Mancini last summer.

"I am not sure if I’m playing my best – I have had some very good years – but we are playing some good football at City," he said in the Daily Express.

"Pellegrini becoming coach has worked out very well. We have scored a lot of goals and it is crucial for my game to play his style of football. For that reason, people appreciate me more.

"I had bad luck to have the injuries when I was in good form but I was able to bounce back quickly and play well.

"I have played in the second half in the last three matches and my approach remains the same – if you have a chance then take it and do all you can. It is what all of us in the squad are doing."

In a repeat of the 2010 final, Spain will get their Group B campaign underway against Holland, and Silva is hoping that last year’s experiences in Brazil at the Confederations Cup will stand them in good stead.

Vicente Del Bosque’s side were brushed aside by the hosts in a 3-0 final defeat and they could meet again this summer should both sides win their groups.

Silva said: "Brazil at home press a lot and the stadiums are incredible. We will have to know how to play against this. Hopefully we’ll get to the final and play Brazil or whoever.

"First we take on Holland, who we were up against in the final four years ago and it will be like another final for us.

"The first game is important to give you confidence. It makes a big difference. We need to play our style and feel comfortable however the opposition play, whether it is with five defenders or not."
