Middlesbrough have agreed a deal with former Sunderland midfielder Dean Whitehead.

Dean Whitehead: Former Sunderland and Stoke midfielder signing for Middlesbrough

Sky Sports can confirm that the 31-year-old has agreed terms on a two-year contract with Boro.

The Teessiders have been in talks with Whitehead for a number of weeks following his release by Stoke City and he is now undergoing a medical ahead of putting pen to paper.

Whitehead returns to the North East after spending five years with rivals Sunderland before moving to Stoke in 2009.

Whitehead will be Boro's second signing of the summer, following on from the loan capture of Hungary international Jozsef Varga.
