Daniel Ayala: Has made a bright start to loan spell at Middlesbrough

Caretaker manager Venus was given permission to make a move for Ayala after inheriting the Riverside Stadium reins on the back of Tony Mowbray's departure.

He handed the 22-year-old his debut in a home date with Doncaster Rovers and got the perfect response as the new boy found the target and helped to keep a clean sheet in a 4-0 win.

Venus is now looking for former Liverpool academy graduate Ayala to build on his impressive bow, with the Spanish centre-half proving how useful an asset he can be when clear of the injuries which have blighted his time at Norwich City and a season-long stint at Nottingham Forest last term.

He told the Gazette: "I'm really pleased the new lad got a goal.

"I thought he was strong, he was just what we needed and I'm glad he's here. I'm glad the chairman allowed me to have him and I'm glad he did himself justice and me justice.

"I wanted him training on Wednesday and Thursday. I thought it was important I had a look at him.

"I needed a look at him, I knew he was a bit rusty but, to be honest, he was great on the night, he was fantastic.

"The lad's had a few injury problems, he's had some decent clubs and maybe hasn't been given a chance so let's hope we can give him some games and get his career off and running."

e'll be fine, no problem. If they do get relegated, he's definitely going to ask how anyone could ever have thought that Villa were going to be fine given their problems before he came.

toke though. Hmn. I don't think it was defending that made people dislike Stoke so much as the out and out cheating/nastiness they regularly displayed. That, and they kept buying the odd flair player and then ruining them (Oh! Tuncay, what were you thinking?).

ell that really inspires me with confidence. No point in training, deciding on a coherent formation, or playing players in their best positions, let's just hope we get lucky.
