Martin Jol: Fulham manager happy to start 2013 with a 2-1 win at West Brom

Fulham began 2013 in 14th spot in the Premier League following a run of just one win in 12 games, but goals from Dimitar Berbatov and Alex Kacaniklic saw off West Brom.

Jol, who spent two years with the Baggies in the 1980s as a player, told Sky Sports: "We are in a false position but the league doesn't lie. Starting the New Year with three points is great."

Berbatov again impressed for Fulham and Jol was full of praise for the Bulgarian, who has been his side's shining light since his move from Manchester United last summer.

"He wants us to win and do well and pass it," added Jol. "I am very happy with him."

The win was the first time Fulham had picked up three points at West Brom in the Premier League and Berbatov was always anticipating a tough test after the Baggies enjoyed a storming start to the second half.

Berbatov said: "It was very important for us. We did it against a very good team. They are playing very well especially at home. We knew it was going to be tough for us."

After Romelu Lukaku had levelled early in the second half, the on-loan striker and James Morrison were both denied by the post, but Berbatov felt the Cottagers were worthy winners.

He said that Fulham "showed character", adding: "I think we deserved three points."
