Martin Jol: Does his best to unearth hidden gems

While funds have been made available to a succession of managers at Craven Cottage, there is no blank chequebook on offer.

Jol has found that out during his tenure, but has fared admirably in his efforts to bring quality additions on board.

An agreement for Dimitar Berbatov has proved to be a shrewd piece of business, and the Cottagers are hoping for a similar return from loan signings Adel Taarabt and Darren Bent - two proven performers who are capable of turning any Premier League fixture on their day.

Jol said of his wheeling and dealing: "Sometimes you have to be creative and take them when the situation is bad.

"We won't pay big transfer fees and we have a certain amount in our budget to spend. Sometimes you have to take a gamble.

"At Tottenham I sold Dimitar Berbatov for £30million and took him back for peanuts. Adel was going to PSG a year ago for a lot of money and now we've picked him. That's what I try to do."

On Taarabt, who struggled at times last season as Queens Park Rangers were relegated out of the top flight, Jol added: "Adel's certainly a player a club like us could do with in their squad.

"He gives us that extra thing and I need goals and creativity up front.

"Hopefully he can improve and he'll become a player who scores eight, nine or 10 goals and produces more assists.

"But there's not a lot of players with his talent in Europe. He needs to do it on a consistent basis and he needs confidence."

t's a bloody good goal, though. Sh!t, the kid's gonna be the worlds best before we know it, isn't he? He's got the touch of genius in him. Like Neymar, but with muscles and stuff. He's doing a Ronaldo as we watch. He's bulked up to be able to ride the tackles, but he's improved technically as well. His touch is sublime. Bugger.
