Nigel Pearson: Was pleased with Liam Moore's performance

Pearson had to watch the game from the stands because of a one-match touchline ban but saw 20-year-old defender Liam Moore score his first goal for the club with a powerful header in the 15th minute.

The Foxes controlled most of the match, although Wigan had penalty appeals turned down in the first half when Marc-Antoine Fortune went tumbling after a challenge from Moore.

Leicester then clinched victory in the 81st minute when David Nugent hammered home a penalty after Jamie Vardy had been tripped by Jean Beausejour.

Foxes boss Pearson said: "It was a good match and a good performance by us.

"Liam played his part in a very good team performance. It's the first time he has scored and a reward for the way he has worked at his game in the last 12 to 15 months.

"We've controlled the majority of the game and, even when Wigan had a little more possession just before we went 2-0 up, we've been fairly comfortable.

"We've beaten a side who will do well and have some very good players.

"We used Jamie Vardy to stretch them with his pace and he caused them problems.

"I'm pretty pleased with how the season has started. We've shown we can win games when we're not playing well but today we did.

"You could argue it was our best all-round team performance of the season."

Latics boss Owen Coyle said: "We got the rough end of two decisions. It was a stonewall penalty when Fortune was fouled, then Vardy has got on the wrong side of Beausejour and it's not a penalty.

"We came into the game on the back of a terrific performance against Forest looking for three points but we did not play as well as we can.

"It was very disappointing to concede such a soft goal. It was a good header but he (Liam Moore) hasn't been marked.

"There were only three or four players with plus marks when you need seven or eight. If I could have used all seven substitutes, I would have done.

"Yet we had the momentum and looked like equalising until they got the penalty.

"This league is about 46 games not six, and we will get better. There's still a lot for us to look forward to."

terling needs to be told though that upon entering the Arsenal squad he will re-enact the final scene from Highlander where he will be thrown around a warehouse by cartoon dragons and then be a mere mortal that will only ever spend three to four weeks a season playing football and the rest on the physio's bed. There can be only one.....player available at The Emirates.

he game changed in our favour when Carrick came on. We were able to play further up the pitch due to having a player who can give and go with the ball and keep possession. Yet barkley made some runs and Townsend scored a good goal but carrick's inclusion and chiellini's withdrawal made the biggest difference to the flow of the game

o, you've not silenced anyone Andros, i'm afraid. We know you can score a great goal, and it's really handy to have your direct running and willingness to shoot on the bench. But until you can do the other things expected of a winger (beat the man, put a decent cross in, stay wide etc) then you can't expect more than a regular cameo. Wonderful goal though, what a hit! No wonder Buffon wanted the shirt.
