Coyle: Wigan players inspired

Owen Coyle revealed his Wigan side took inspiration from the town's Super League Grand Final-winning team after they beat Blackburn, while Rovers boss Gary Bowyer lamented Grant Hanley's red card.

The Latics boss was among those who watched Wigan Warriors overturn the largest deficit in Grand Final history against Warrington at Old Trafford on Saturday to add that trophy to their Challenge Cup triumph.

And, after going behind to Tommy Spurr's eighth-minute opener, Coyle's men were assisted by Grant Hanley's sending off half an hour in before rallying with a pair of second-half goals.

Substitute Grant Holt marked his first appearance since August by claiming the first, although it may ultimately go down as a Spurr own goal.

Then fellow replacement Emmerson Boyce, who had captained Latics in their first ever home European tie just three days earlier, grabbed a stoppage-time winner to cap off a historic sporting week for the Greater Manchester town.

"We all watched last night and it was inspirational when you see the comeback," Coyle said.

"We've shown that on the football side this year, the amount of points we've retrieved from losing positions...it tells you everything about the character and the spirit you've got at your club.

"People will always talk when they're winning games about how good the spirit is, that comes hand in hand, but the testimony to any team spirit and camaraderie is when your team is up against it.

"You saw it last night in the rugby league, that comeback was amazing, and again today the lads showed a lot of good attributes there that really pleased me."

It may have been a different story had stand-in captain Hanley not been dismissed half an hour in for sticking an arm in the face of loanee Nick Powell.

Coyle acknowledged his team were feeling the effects of a European hangover but was more than happy to see the momentum shift once they gained a numerical advantage.

He added: "They've got something to hold on to taking the early goal but I felt we've grown into the game and then the lad's got the red card.

"He's been silly because he's been in control of the situation and he's thrown his arm out and there's no need to do it.

"I'm pretty sure Gary (Bowyer, Blackburn manager) will be upset by that."

Bowyer was actually more perplexed than upset, insisting he had no idea why referee Stuart Attwell had instantly brandished the red card.

And, due to Hanley's Scottish accent, Bowyer was left none the wiser when he quizzed his centre-back as he trudged off the pitch.

"I've not seen it again and I didn't see it in real time," said the Rovers boss, who also lamented the decision not to award a penalty when Jordan Rhodes' shot struck Ben Watson's arms.

"I didn't know what he got sent off for and as he came off I asked him what he did. I have to be honest I didn't understand him with the answer he gave me so I need to go and see it.

"It changed the course of the game because up until then we were very comfortable. We were pleased with how we were playing and we're disappointed to be leaving here without taking something from the game.

"Once the referee makes the decision there's an hour to play and our lads were magnificent."

m not sure about this distance covered malarky, plus that stat comes with *since February attached to it, that's just 1 month. I mean I have 27 open cases I'm 'working on' at the moment but believe me others with 10 cases work harder than I do. I just got back from a pub lunch, scampi and chips (+4 pints) in case you were wondering.
