Richard Wood: Earned a deal at Charlton after impressing on trial

The experienced defender found himself without a club at the start of the summer, with Coventry City having released him at the end of his contract.

The 28-year-old wasted no time, though, in finding new employment, with Charlton offering him a route back into the Championship.

Having spent much of his career competing in the top two divisions, the Addicks knew what they were getting.

Wood had to prove his worth during a stint training with Chris Powell's side, and had other options to consider, but he has seen his decision to link up with Charlton pay off as he has been a regular starter throughout the opening weeks of the season.

He told the South London Press: "When I found out I could go on trial with Charlton, then I had to give it a go.

"I had confidence in myself to do it rather than sit back and take an easier option.

"I wanted to play in the Championship - I knew I could still do that.

"Football has changed a lot in the last few years. There are so many players out of contract and without a team, because all over the country clubs have tightened their belts. It's a lot harder to get anything. I was happy to come in and prove myself.

"When I got the chance to try and get in the team and earn a contract, I grabbed it. Sitting here now, it has worked out well because I'm playing.

"I'm really enjoying it here. It's a great bunch and the manager has been really good with me as well. It's a shame results are not going so well for us - that is the only down side."

lassic management. Build them up and then knock them back. Raise expectations and then dampen them. Create a dynamic where by you demand the most from your team, but where the team are given room to manoeuvre unexpected or unwanted results. Classy work by Van Gaal, he really reminds me a lot of me. A smart cookie, make no doubt.
