Gianfranco Zola: Has been boosted by Iriney's performances

The Brazilian penned a two-year deal from Granada over the summer and was one of a raft of new faces at Vicarage Road designed to boost Gianfranco Zola's ranks following last season's play-off final disappointment at Wembley.

After the first 11 games of this season, the Hornets currently sit fifth in the table with six wins and two defeats to their name - five points better off than at the same stage last term.

"It's been a good season so far considering we have many new players," Iriney told the club's official website.

"It can be difficult sometimes when you bring to the squad lots of players, but our aim is to be at the top and I think we are doing well.

"Of course we will have to keep getting better in the future and we have room to improve, but we can be happy with our progress so far."

Having started his career in Brazil before spending 11 years in Spain, Iriney feels he has settled quickly into life in England.

And, with nine starts and two substitute appearances under his belt, the defence-minded 32-year-old has certainly fit neatly into Zola's plans.

Iriney added: "When a player feels like he's at home and his team-mates make him feel at home, he always performs better on the pitch. It's obvious that these things go together.

"That's what is happening now and I already feel at home here at Watford."

ou can't blame De Gea for wanting to leave, he has enough to do in front of goal as it is as well as taking on the role of Man Utd's version of Derek Acorah in trying to contact and organise a defence that isn't there.
