The three players have an average age of under 22 but McClean has already represented the Republic of Ireland at senior level, while Manchester United loanee Powell and McManaman have both caught the eye on the grand stage in Wembley finals over the past two seasons.

Given centre-forwards Grant Holt and Marc-Antoine Fortune have missed Latics' last two encounters through injury, Coyle, himself a former striker, is keen to help his youngsters fulfil their potential in the final third.

"Those are three exciting players but also young players so within that they have scope to improve and get better," said Coyle.

"Having been up there myself I really look forward to the challenge of getting the best out of those exciting players, bringing them on, being pleasing on the eye but also being match-winners at the top of the pitch.

"As a manager I'm a footballer lover and as much as I'd like to see good players - and they're certainly that - they bring with that youth natural enthusiasm.

"When they've got that, and the way they get about the game and the pace they play, that has a natural knock-on effect to everybody else."

irst Townsend, now Chiles. What next ITV? Comedy that you can actually watch without vomiting up your own spleen? I'll be sad to see Matt Smith go though. I actually quite like him. Plus, he was good in Doctor Who.

wful, awful pundit. He was crap on BBC, and offered a little more analysis than Robbie Savage - apart from the delivery of banality in a sexy accent. Also, as I'm Irish he'll never be more then a slimy, hand-balling f**ker in my eyes.
