New role for Giaccherini

Kevin Ball is making big changes following Paolo Di Canio's exit including a new role for Italian Emanuele Giaccherini.

Giaccherini was used out wide by Di Canio, following his summer move from Juventus - but Ball experimented with the former Juventus man in a 'no 10' role against Peterborough in the League Cup.

And the Sunderland caretaker felt it worked well.

"We were debating how we wanted to set up on Tuesday and we were mindful of how well Peterborough had started the season," said Ball.

"We looked at how we could fit in among that and we said about playing Giaccy in the No 10 role and I thought he did it really well.

"There were bits that were excellent and there were bits that we will speak to him about and try to help him with.

"But he will be able to evaluate his own performance when he watches it back, so he can say 'maybe I could have done this or that'.

"I thought in the main though, he did really well, when you look at his movement and running.

"He put in an excellent shift, got a goal and deserved the applause he got when he came off."

Ball is also backing recalled Lee Cattermole to make a big impact. Cattermole was brought back in Di Canio's final game in charge at West Brom, but he now looks firmly back in the first-team fold.

"When I saw him on the pitch on Tuesday - bearing in mind he had not played 90 minutes for a long time - I think he produced a very accomplished performance, along with a fabulous ball for the goal," said Ball.

"He drove the team on and that's what we need."

t's wrong to be making a joke out of Bender's name at the expense of gay people. It's the kind of childish, uncivilised thing that Football365 would deride and ridicule if it was another media outlet saying. Why is there a need for jokes like this? Does it make your writers feel like men? F365 might suggest that I 'lighten up', but it is genuinely traumatic for people who have been oppressed all their lives to be the butt of jokes, and to be told...

ou can't blame De Gea for wanting to leave, he has enough to do in front of goal as it is as well as taking on the role of Man Utd's version of Derek Acorah in trying to contact and organise a defence that isn't there.

f you want to take six points off Arsenal, then that's a great strike force. Can't imagine either of them showing much for the rest of the season though...
