The Black Cats full back, who grabbed the winner in his side's win over Manchester City on Sunday, was fined and suspended by the club after mocking the opening day defeat by Fulham.

Former Man United defender Bardsley found himself ostracized under Paulo Di Canio, who was critical of the 27-year-old after a late-night visit to a casino late last season.

However, Bardsley has returned the team under new manager Gus Poyet and is grateful for a second chance on Wearside.

"The reaction from the supporters meant a lot," he admitted to the Sunderland Echo. "I let them down and it was up to me to repay them with performances on the football pitch.

"I'm trying to do that as much as I can and if I keep scoring goals and keep defending the way I have done in the last couple of games, hopefully I will do that.

"The manager has come in and brought me in from the cold and I'm enjoying myself."

Sunderland have carved out their first two wins in the league this season under Poyet, who Bardsley credits for his side's win over title favourites City at the Stadium of Light.

"As much desire and commitment as we've shown, when we had the ball, we showed great desire to pass it and move, and make angles," he added.

"That's exactly what the manager wants. His philosophy on football is fantastic and the lads are loving playing for him."
