Chris Hughton: Full of praise for Sunderland boss Gus Poyet

Former Tottenham and Chelsea striker Poyet took over on Wearside after Paolo Di Canio's eventful spell at the club came to a premature end in September.

Poyet has since led his side to victories over local rivals Newcastle and Manchester City in the Premier League before guiding them to a 2-1 extra-time win over Chelsea in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night.

That earned Sunderland a two-legged semi-final tie with Manchester United in January and Hughton has been full of praise for the Uruguayan.

"Gus was a wonderful player, but was always very passionate about the way he played the game and his thoughts on the game, so it was no surprise to me that he went into coaching and management," he said.

"The biggest task for him at Sunderland was that he had a lot of players who had been brought in during the summer by the previous manager.

"Gus' responsibility now will be to put his own stamp on the team and I am quite sure he will do that.

"Sunderland will be boosted to have got through to the semi-finals of the League Cup, but we have to look at ourselves."

Norwich have picked up seven points from their last four matches to edge away from the relegation zone and could move into the top half of the table if results go their way this weekend.

Hughton's side reacted positively to a 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool in a game that saw Luis Suarez score four times against them as they won 2-0 at West Brom before drawing 1-1 with Swansea.

The Canaries boss is hoping they can continue that good form but remains wary of the threat posed by Sunderland.

"We are on the back of a good performance against Swansea and also off a good away result at West Brom, so we want to keep the momentum ourselves," he added.

"It is always a balance, because you know they have enough good players that if you do not perform, they can hurt you.

"You have to be in the game yourself and give yourself an opportunity to win it.

"You have to set your team up knowing you are away from home, so you have to be resilient enough not to conceded, but also you have to score goals to win it."

was there, it was embarrassing - the team looked totally unbalanced from the off, the defence was woeful and when Mikel came off injured it got even worse with nobody in front of them. Up front on several occasions we had opportunities and nobody would shoot - it was a complete farse! On the back of Salah's performance I'm glad there is talk of getting shot...

reat to see Tommy Rosicky getting some love. A wonderful player. Such a pity we lost so long to injury. I was so excited when we signed him, this resurgence only makes the absences seem more of a lost opportunity.
