Liam Jones, 22, was also given an 18-month conditional discharge after entering a guilty plea to the charges over his actions at Sunderland's clash with West Brom at the Stadium of Light in November.

Jones, from East Vines, Hendon, was photographed in the stands making a monkey gesture towards Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku, who had just scored for the side he spent last season on loan with from Chelsea.

During Lukaku's celebration, Jones could be seen shouting at the striker with his hands cupped towards his armpits.

Jones later told reporters he was doing a 'chicken dance' and pleaded not guilty, but he changed that plea at a hearing last week ahead of his trial, which was due to take place next month.

Chief Superintendent Steve Neill of Northumbria Police said: "Racist behaviour of any kind will not be tolerated and Northumbria Police will fully investigate any reports made to us.

"We know people who are responsible for these actions are part of a small minority and would continue to encourage anyone who sees this kind of behaviour to report it to us and help us rid football of any racism."

was there, it was embarrassing - the team looked totally unbalanced from the off, the defence was woeful and when Mikel came off injured it got even worse with nobody in front of them. Up front on several occasions we had opportunities and nobody would shoot - it was a complete farse! On the back of Salah's performance I'm glad there is talk of getting shot...

reat to see Tommy Rosicky getting some love. A wonderful player. Such a pity we lost so long to injury. I was so excited when we signed him, this resurgence only makes the absences seem more of a lost opportunity.
