Cardiff can win promotion to Premier League; Bristol City could be relegated

Cardiff City can clinch promotion to the Premier League on Tuesday night, while Bristol City will be trying to avoid relegation to League One.

With the majority of the Championship having just four games left to play, Tuesday's full programme features all 24 teams and a host of key fixtures.

A case could be made for saying only ninth-placed Charlton Athletic have nothing left to play for as the top eight are all in contention for promotion and only six points separate Middlesbrough in 10th spot from the bottom three.

Leaders Cardiff have endured several near misses in recent seasons, but Malky Mackay's side can finally claim a place in the top flight if they pick up a point at home to Charlton.

However, even if Cardiff slip up, the club could still be promoted if third-placed Watford, who are 12 points adrift, fail to win at beaten FA Cup semi-finalists Millwall.

Hull City could take a giant stride towards a return to the Premier League when Steve Bruce's second-placed side head to second-bottom Wolves, who dropped back into the relegation zone after losing at home to Huddersfield Town at the weekend.

Bottom club Bristol City are 10 points from safety and face Birmingham City knowing defeat at Ashton Gate will send them down. Even a draw could see Sean O'Driscoll's men demoted, if Peterborough United and Blackburn Rovers both avoid defeat.

Blackburn climbed out of the drop zone on Saturday and face fellow strugglers Huddersfield at Ewood Park in a match which will see former Terriers striker Jordan Rhodes face his old club.

Peterborough's impressive nine-game unbeaten run has only been enough to lift them a point and a place outside the bottom three and Darren Ferguson's side welcome play-off contenders Brighton & Hove Albion to London Road.

Barnsley were hammered 6-0 at home by Charlton at the weekend and dropped back into the bottom three as a result. The Tykes play host to Derby County.

Brian McDermott enjoyed a winning start to his Leeds United career and another three points at home to Burnley should see his new club certain of survival.

Crystal Palace have failed to win in their last five games and will be determined to put their stuttering play-off push back on track at Ipswich Town.

Bolton Wanderers jumped into the top six at the weekend and former Palace boss Dougie Freedman is looking for a fourth straight win when he takes his team to Leicester City, who are two points outside the play-offs.

Nottingham Forest's defeat at Cardiff at the weekend was the first since Billy Davies returned as manager and saw the club lose their place in the top six. Forest head to Middlesbrough, who have lost more games than any club in the division this season bar Bristol City.

Blackpool and Sheffield Wednesday meet at Bloomfield Road knowing that victory for either team is likely to be enough to guarantee playing Championship football next season.

Yes, thats what the kaleidoscopic whirlwind of highs and lows feels like supporting the Tractor Boys. In other exciting news I saw two, count them, TWO squirrels today. What a start to August.
