Jackett credits Doherty goal

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett said Matt Doherty is adamant about claiming the late strike that maintained his side's good start to the season.

This, after Doherty's 85th-minute effort sealed a 2-1 win at Bristol City.

The full-back mishit his far post volley from a Bakary Sako cross and saw the ball bounce on to the underside of the crossbar before being followed into the net by City defender Aden Flint, who could not prevent it crossing the line.

Jackett was not sure himself whether it was an own goal, but said: "Matt is definitely claiming it, as any player would in that situation.

"I couldn't see from my position whether a defender got the final touch, but Matt deserves the credit for being in such a good position to score."

Sako had blasted Wolves in front with a superbly-struck 25-yard free-kick from the corner of the box in the 22nd minute after the impressive Kevin Doyle had been fouled.

But against the run of play Jay Emmanuel-Thomas fired a 53rd-minute equaliser after Sam Baldock had robbed Richard Stearman and crossed low from the right.

Jackett added: "It was a big win for us against a club with a lot of talented players.

"We had opportunities to be more than one goal ahead at half-time, but Bristol were always going to have a spell and we had to weather it after they equalised.

"They had a passionate crowd behind them and we had a fight on our hands.

"To then show the character to bounce back and take all three points said a lot about the players."

Bristol were all over the place defensively as the visitors dominated the opening 45 minutes, forcing several saves from home goalkeeper Frank Fielding.

But the hosts were a different team after equalising and Wolves keeper Carl Ikeme made a brilliant double save from Baldock after 63 minutes.

That save was matched by Fielding's reaction stop from Doyle's shot seven minutes later and Jackett admitted: "In the end the game could have gone either way."
