Mauricio Pochettino: Southampton should be confident

Despite losing 2-1 to league-leaders United after having taken the lead, the Saints received praise from Sir Alex Ferguson, who claimed their display after the break was the best he had seen from a visiting team all season.

"That is the way we want to play but perhaps in the first half (at Old Trafford) we weren't able to do so," said Pochettino, who was only taking charge of his second game as Saints boss at Old Trafford after replacing the sacked Nigel Adkins last month.

"I am not happy with the way we played in the first half. That is not how we wanted to play. But I am very proud and happy with the way we played in the second.

"Our performance in the second half is going to give my players the confidence to play on like that in the future."

Saturday's opponents Wigan, who are three points behind Southampton, present a different challenge for Pochettino's side and the Spaniard expects a tough match.

"All games have their complexity and difficulty," he said. "But in any game, where you have a chance of getting the three points you must keep that mentality and go for the win."
