Point pleases Pochettino

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino was pleased with the point his side won at Sunderland after leaving the Stadium of Light with a 1-1 draw that moves them up to 14th in the Premier League table.

James Ward-Prowse set up Southampton's leveller for fellow substitute Jason

Pochettino replaced the controversially dismissed Nigel Adkins in January and while he has won plaudits for the manner in which his side have played, his points-per-game ratio is similar to his predecessor.

Although loath to be engaged in a discussion about who he replaced at the Southampton helm, Pochettino was relieved to win the point that all but secures the Saints' top flight status.

Asked if he had justified his appointment, he said: "I'm not sure.

"I've been hearing the same question for four months now. It's not for me to answer that question.

"Yes, we are happy. The players have put in an amazing performance in the four months that I have been here.

"That's what I can do. I can't speak about previous to when I arrived."

Pochettino was also pleased with the impact his double substitution had on the game just when his team needed it most, after falling behind to Phil Bardsley's wonder strike.

James Ward-Prowse crossed for fellow substitute Jason Puncheon to dispatch at the second attempt and their manager admits he was happy with his role in what could prove to be a crucial goal.

He said: "When you make substitutions, you always want them to have an impact and today the two substitutions I made had an immediate impact.

"It was a centre from Ward-Prowse and Puncheon got the goal, so it was immediate."

terling needs to be told though that upon entering the Arsenal squad he will re-enact the final scene from Highlander where he will be thrown around a warehouse by cartoon dragons and then be a mere mortal that will only ever spend three to four weeks a season playing football and the rest on the physio's bed. There can be only one.....player available at The Emirates.

he game changed in our favour when Carrick came on. We were able to play further up the pitch due to having a player who can give and go with the ball and keep possession. Yet barkley made some runs and Townsend scored a good goal but carrick's inclusion and chiellini's withdrawal made the biggest difference to the flow of the game

o, you've not silenced anyone Andros, i'm afraid. We know you can score a great goal, and it's really handy to have your direct running and willingness to shoot on the bench. But until you can do the other things expected of a winger (beat the man, put a decent cross in, stay wide etc) then you can't expect more than a regular cameo. Wonderful goal though, what a hit! No wonder Buffon wanted the shirt.
