Pochettino not looking to sell

Mauricio Pochettino has warned their Premier League rivals that Southampton want to keep hold of their best young players.

Mauricio Pochettino: Southampton boss keen to nurture young talent at the club

Previous graduates of Southampton's academy include Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who were sold for big money to Spurs and Arsenal, respectively.

In the current Saints side are academy products Luke Shaw, James Ward-Prowse and more experienced skipper Adam Lallana and Pochettino says he wants to keep the players at the club and build for the future.

The Argentine coach told reporters: "We will do as much as we can to make sure they are here for a long time.

"We cannot control or avoid other clubs being interested in our young players. That is out of our hands.

"It was clear from the beginning when (chairman) Nicola Cortese called me that we were going to focus on the academy, strengthen it and use as much as we can from it.

"I am a believer in the philosophy to push up the young players. I am a keen supporter in nurturing them, making sure they come through the ranks and being part of this club.

"We also have to remember that players like Ward-Prowse and Shaw are only 18. Sometimes we speak about them as if they are 24 or 25.

"They have a very long path and have a lot to learn still."

Tight defence

Saints beat Fulham 2-0 on Saturday to sit fifth in the top flight table, with 18 points from their opening nine games.

A major part in their success is their defence, which has conceded just three goals in those nine games - the best record in the top flight.

Defender Dejan Lovren, a £8.5m capture from Lyon, has praised the influence of Pochettino, himself a defender in his playing days.

He said: "Each day we talk and he gives us a lot of advice because he is an intelligent man. He gives us instructions and everything is perfect.

"I have really learned a lot from him. I didn't expect to learn something like this. We keep the line very high and I've never played like this before.

"It's a little bit of a risk but we do a good job. When we lose the ball we need to get it back very quickly.

"This is the best defence I have played in. In nine games, we have conceded just three goals. In this league, it is very hard to do that so I think we deserve respect now."

s it the same people that complain about Chelsea that complain about Mayweather? You should by now know what to expect from both, if you can't appreciate how good they are at nullifying their opponents then don't watch them.

do concede though, that getting rid of Luiz has made them less entertaining. In the same way that driving with both eyes open is less exciting, but probably a good idea.
