Mauricio Pochettino: All smiles after a thrilling Southampton victory

Morgan Schneiderlin, Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Steven Davis all netted as Saints took their unbeaten run to eight matches.

A sixth top-flight victory lifted Saints into third in the Premier League standings, making this their best start to a top-flight season, trumping the 1983-84 campaign when they finished runners-up.

With European football very much in sight for Southampton, Pochettino, who was named Manager of the Month for October, insists there are no limits as to how far this team can go.

"I am very proud and I want to congratulate my players one more time for their effort today, they have done very well," he told Sky Sports via his interpreter.

"The performance today was outstanding.

"We don't set ourselves any limits, we can do more. The sky is the limit.

"We can always do more and more. Every game we see as a final and we just want to keep on collecting more points."

Inspired

Earlier in the week, England manager Roy Hodgson acknowledged Southampton's fine start to the season by calling Jay Rodriguez, Lallana and Lambert into the squad ahead of the friendlies against Chile and Germany.

Hodgson will have been delighted after making the trip to the south coast to watch the trio and Pochettino believes his players vindicated their selection.

"It is clear getting a call-up to your national side is going to inspire you, make you even more confident and motivated," the Argentine said.

"We saw that it did have an influence on them today and it just reinforces the fact that they can do well for their club and country."

Following the international break, Southampton face stern tests against both Arsenal and Chelsea but Pochettino remains grounded, insisting his players will continue to put in the hard work.

"We are fully aware that we just have to keep on doing what we have been doing," he added.

"We have to keep on working with the same work ethic so we do not deviate from the path we are on."
