James Ward-Prowse: Confident Southampton can finish in the top six

Saints finished the year with a run of poor results and Sunday's 2-1 loss to Everton left them in ninth place, seven points behind Manchester United in sixth.

The defeat at Goodison Park was particularly frustrating because Romelu Lukaku's winning goal came just three minutes after Gaston Ramirez had equalised, but Ward-Prowse remains optimistic about their prospects for the second half of the season

Southampton host Chelsea on New Year's Day and Ward-Prowse hopes they can register a famous win before going on to challenge for a European spot.

"We're disappointed and angry with ourselves for letting a draw go after conceding so quickly after getting back in the game with a good goal," the midfielder told the Southern Daily Echo.

"I felt like the second half was much stronger than the first and it was a great strike that got us back in the game.

"But the beauty of this time of year is that the next game is only around the corner. There will soon be a chance to rectify this result, starting against Chelsea.

"It's a good place to push on from where we were last year, hopefully to a place in the top six. As long as we keep working hard in training I'm sure that's a possibility.

"The manager told us afterwards to keep doing what we're doing and the philosophy won't change. The sky's the limit for us.

"We've still got half the season to come and we'll spend each day trying to keep improving."

icky van Wolfswinkel's remarkable record of one goal from one game at least deserves an honourable mention. And I'm willing to bet that at least one of Costa, Ulloa or Enner Valencia will earn a place on the list by the end of the season. Probably not Costa
