Butland explains Stoke switch

Jack Butland believes he made the right call for his career in snubbing Chelsea and agreeing a switch to Stoke City.

Jack Butland: Will link up with Stoke in the Premier League over the summer

Having burst onto the scene last summer, after being drafted into the senior England squad for Euro 2012, Butland's future became a topic of heated debate.

He was yet to make his debut for Birmingham City at that stage, but impressed for Team GB at the Olympic Games and started the 2012/13 as the Blues' number one.

Interest in his services was expected to peak in January, and Stoke ended up securing his signature on deadline day - before loaning him back to Birmingham.

Butland opted to link up with the Potters rather than join the ranks at Stamford Bridge, and he claims that decision was based on his desire to play regularly in the Premier League and earn further international recognition.

He said: "I've seen a lot of people get carried away and my mum and dad would be the first to take me down if that ever happened. But I know myself that's not going to get me anywhere.

"It's not good for my career or fair to teams to be arrogant, or act differently to everyone else. Most people who eventually get to the top are switched on, intelligent, humble, professional people. To be the best you've got to act like the best.

"It was a very important decision to make in terms of when and where I would move next.

"Turning down Chelsea was, and wasn't, a difficult decision. Chelsea is a fantastic place and a great place to play football. They are the European champions, but Stoke is a fantastic club for different reasons.

"I feel I can develop my game better at Stoke than I can at Chelsea at the minute. It is as simple as that. Chelsea didn't do anything wrong, I just didn't think it suited me right now."

Challenge

Butland added: "I have been at Birmingham a long time and had my spells in the Championship and League Two and I feel if I really want to push Joe Hart and the other senior keepers for an England spot, I need to be playing Premier League football.

"I feel I am capable of doing it and Stoke have a very good set-up with a very good goalkeeping coach. I am really at ease with the decision and looking forward to it."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
