Hughes was sacked as Manchester City manager in December 2009 when the club's current owners opted to go in a different direction by appointing Italian Roberto Mancini.

And the Welshman has dismissed all talk of revenge this weekend as he looks to build on Stoke's impressive start to the season.

"I enjoyed my time at Manchester City," he said. "Yes, it was difficult as it was a big time of change for the club, but I think I can look back upon my time there and be pleased with what we achieved.

"The season that I got the sack we had lost two games in 17, so it wasn't too bad.

"The owners wanted to make a change and bring in their own man, though, and that is football I guess."

Stoke bounced back from an opening day defeat against Liverpool to record victories over West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Hughes paid tribute to the character shown by his players and insisted Saturday's game will be no easy task for the visitors.

"The players have shown tremendous work ethic and their attitude to everything that myself and staff have asked of them has been first class," said the 49-year-old.

"They are a great bunch of players to work with.

"The international break probably came at the wrong time for us, but Manchester City may say the same too, as they have lost a couple of players through injury.

"We're on a good run as I said before and ideally we would have played this game straight after West Ham.

"We're prepared though and we are ready to give them a real good game tomorrow."
