Poyet: Wickham must wait

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet says a decision will be made on Connor Wickham's future once he returns from a loan spell.

Connor Wickham: Due back at Sunderland in the New Year

Connor Wickham: Due back at Sunderland in the New Year

The England U21 international is currently taking in a second stint at Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday.

He has netted four goals during a productive stay at Hillsborough, but will be due back on Wearside when a short-term agreement comes to an end on 1st January.

It has been suggested that Sunderland will then look to offload Wickham on a permanent basis during the winter transfer window.

Poyet has, however, rubbished such reports, claiming that the 20-year-old remains part of his plans.

He will continue to monitor how Wickham is getting on at Wednesday and will make a call on his long-term future once the youngster has returned to the Stadium of Light.

Poyet told the Sunderland Echo: "Nothing's been decided, although it's not something I would usually comment on. But we haven't even talked about that (a permanent departure).

"He needs to play and after he gets back from loan, we will talk with him as well.

"We knew he needed to play a few games and we are keeping an eye on him all the time."

Stuart Gray has already expressed a desire to keep Wickham at Hillsborough, with the Owls' caretaker coach revealing that a loan extension will be explored in the New Year.

He said: "He's our player on loan, at this moment in time it's just fingers crossed we can do something in January."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.

'Tactically Inept And Lacking In Belief And Style'

It's fair to say that the 'Moyes Out' brigade is understandably out in force, whilst there are also staunch defences of Mourinho and Arteta. Plus, Liverpool fans can almost taste it.

That's Why We Didn't Want Jose At United

There is plenty of reaction to Mourinho's antics (Isn't that exactly what he wanted?) plus thoughts on Connor Wickham, Fabio Borini, beach balls and Tim Sherwood...
