The 24-year-old was injured after a heavy fall at the Laugardalsvvllur national stadium early in the second half in Iceland's 4-2 defeat to Slovenia on Friday and was rushed to hospital.

If it turns out that Gunnarsson suffered a dislocated shoulder it could leave one of the Bluebirds' key men facing a battle to be fit for the start of the new Premier League season.

Cardiff's head of performance Richard Collinge told the club's official website: "Aron is currently undergoing a series of tests and investigations to determine the extent of his shoulder injury, from which we will be able to implement a management and recovery schedule.

"Any injury is frustrating for a player, but we will give Aron the best possible support to enable a swift return to action."
