The Bluebirds had to come from behind to rescue a point after they fell behind to a first-half Curtis Davis header.

Peter Whittingham completed a delightful Cardiff move to level proceedings and Mackay believes his side are displaying top-flight quality.

Mackay's men came away with a point, meaning their opening four Premier League fixtures have yielded five points, leaving them well poised in the middle of the table.

"It was probably a fair point for both sides," he said. "Both teams had their periods of dominance throughout the game and it ended all square.

"We both had chances other than the goals, a couple of weeks ago we scored a goal against Manchester City with 17 passes and today we scored one of the best goals since I came to the club two years ago.

"I think it was two teams that went hard at it and we are two teams who have made a comfortable start in this league. It probably was a fair result in the end."

The result comes just two weeks after Cardiff came from behind to produce a stunning 3-2 victory over Manchester City and Mackay hailed the talent displayed by his squad.

He added: "The character and resilience of the team is a positive, that's twice we have come from losing positions to get something.

"Losing David Marshall and Craig Bellamy to injury on international duty is disappointing but on the flip side having top quality international footballers, the fact is they have to play for their country.

"The strength and depth of people coming in and performing today really shows where we are at as a club."
