The hosts held a 2-0 lead until the final eight minutes when Sunderland grabbed two late goals.

Club owner Vincent Tan - spotted booing at the end of the match - sacked Malky Mackay on Friday and Kerslake says he expects to be in charge for the next game against Arsenal on New Year's Day.

And, speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Kerslake thought his players performed well overall.

Kerslake said: "We got ourselves into a really good lead with eight minutes remaining.

"We defended in the main well but we conceded another bad goal and it's something we'll put right.

"In the opening period we were first class. I asked them to come out really quick and that's what they did. In the second half we dropped off but they dug in and gave everything for the cause so I've no complaints there.

"We have to remember that Sunderland are a decent side and they popped it around really well. They pushed bodies forward and it was down to us to defend better.

"We have a belief and a togetherness here and hopefully that will take us a long way.

"I've been told that I've got the team until further notice. The owner wished me well before kick-off."

resumably, you wanted to keep the version of Downing that was never seen at Anfield. The one that another manager has managed to re-create. The one you passed over.

he uber commercialisation of the 90s has led to the point where this overly familar, try hard, jolly hockey sticks type fronts up a major football match on a weekly basis. Unlike the great presenters of yesteryear, I doubt he would even recognise the scent of Brut.
