Gary Medel: Ready for World Cup quest

The 26-year-old completed a big-money move to British football last summer, but was unable to prevent Cardiff from slipping out of the Premier League after just one season among the elite.

A player of his ability is not expected to hang around in the Championship, and numerous clubs have already been linked with a summer approach – including La Liga heavyweights Valencia.

Medel is, however, shelving any transfer thoughts until Chile’s quest for World Cup glory this summer comes to a close – with it his opinion that the South American nation can go all the way in Brazil.

“We’re planning to go far in the tournament," said Medel, with Chile in Group B alongside holders Spain, the Netherlands and Australia.

“We do not want to go out in the first round, we want to be champions and we have the ability to do so.

“We’re going to fight for everything on the pitch, by attacking and attacking again.

“As we have played in all our games, we will do the same and attack. That’s our style and it will be reflected on the pitch.

“We’re not going to be knocked out in the group stages, we’re going to be winners.”

Medel, who is expected to figure in friendly contests against Egypt and Northern Ireland over the course of the next week, added: “For us the World Cup has started, there are no more friendlies left.

“We’re going to try to play to our best ability, we can’t hold anything back.

“If you’re worried about getting injured, it’s better not to be in the squad at all.”

was there, it was embarrassing - the team looked totally unbalanced from the off, the defence was woeful and when Mikel came off injured it got even worse with nobody in front of them. Up front on several occasions we had opportunities and nobody would shoot - it was a complete farse! On the back of Salah's performance I'm glad there is talk of getting shot...

reat to see Tommy Rosicky getting some love. A wonderful player. Such a pity we lost so long to injury. I was so excited when we signed him, this resurgence only makes the absences seem more of a lost opportunity.
