Hughton had been hopeful the forward would recover from a shin injury in time to sit on the bench for Saturday's 2-2 draw with Everton.

But the import from Celtic had to miss the match and Hughton is now looking towards next week's trip to the KC Stadium.

"He's not as close as we would have liked," said Hughton.

"We feared it last week, because he was in a fair amount of pain. He has taken a fair whack but we will look to push him and hopefully have him back for the weekend."

Scotland winger Robert Snodgrass also missed the Everton match after failing a fitness test just before kick-off.

"He has a slight groin problem," said Hughton.

"We had a big decision to make before the game. He came in Friday morning and felt it slightly, had a fitness test before the game, and we had a decision to make.

"If we'd played him he might've been fine but you never know."

ah, Fergie is just having another pop at Rooney. He just wants to put him down whenever he gets a chance. Rooney is by far the best English player. Carrick is not far behind, mind. However, by elevating Carrick like that, Sir is having a dig at Wayne. Fergie is well-known for mind games like that. Good to see he's still feisty.
