The Canaries succumbed to a disappointing 1-0 loss at the KC Stadium at the weekend and, despite making eight changes, Hughton named an experience side as they overcame League Two outfit Bury at Carrow Road.

Only Russell Martin, Bradley Johnson and Leroy Fer retained their places but new signings Martin Olsson and Johan Elmander started their first games for the club and captain Sebastien Bassong also came in.

Elmander was the stand-out performer on the night, scoring twice, while Olsson, Anthony Pilkington, Fer and Steven Whittaker were also on target.

"After Saturday we made a decision that we wanted to go strong," said Hughton.

"I think, with respect to the competition and to Bury, I wouldn't have gone as strong tonight but I must admit it wouldn't have been far from it.

"What there are is lads who need games, three out of my back four haven't played regularly - Martin Olsson, Seb and Ryan Bennett - and they need the games and I thought they came through it very well.

"It was good for those who got 90 minutes under their belt, they needed it. If you look at the side we put out it was strong enough and had a fair amount of intent in that team.

"There is no doubt we were disappointed with the result [at Hull] and certainly the penalty that was given against us. The best way to bounce back from that is to try and get a good result, irrespective of who we were playing, and it is important to take that on."

Elmander is the latest addition to Hughton's squad and the manager was delighted with the former Bolton forward's contribution.

"He has got quality," Hughton added. "He is an experienced player and there are certain moments and touches in his game tonight that show that. He has great game awareness and he took his goals well as well."

Bury boss Kevin Blackwell was pleased with the effort his players showed on the night and felt Norwich keeper Mark Bunn deserved credit for limiting the visitors to three goals.

"The Norwich crowd gave every one of our players a standing ovation at the end. It was a game and a half and their goalkeeper has got man of the match," he said.

"He's pulled off save after save and we've hit the bar and the post and had two strong penalty shouts. I'm proud of the players. It was a good performance.

"How we played was key, some of the Norwich players said when they came off the pitch that we play some good stuff so I'm pleased with the players overall."

e'll be fine, no problem. If they do get relegated, he's definitely going to ask how anyone could ever have thought that Villa were going to be fine given their problems before he came.

toke though. Hmn. I don't think it was defending that made people dislike Stoke so much as the out and out cheating/nastiness they regularly displayed. That, and they kept buying the odd flair player and then ruining them (Oh! Tuncay, what were you thinking?).

ell that really inspires me with confidence. No point in training, deciding on a coherent formation, or playing players in their best positions, let's just hope we get lucky.
