Hughton remains defiant

Norwich City manager Chris Hughton insists he is still the right man for the job after watching his side crash to a humiliating 7-0 defeat at Man City.

Last Updated: 03/11/13 at 08:23 Post Comment

Pressure on Hughton's position in the Norwich hot-seat continues to mount after a disastrous week in Manchester, where Norwich bowed out of the Capital One Cup four days earlier with a 4-0 loss at Old Trafford.

Norwich were second best by a distance at City on Saturday, falling 3-0 down inside 25 minutes as Manuel Pellegrini's men ran amok.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the defeat, Hughton admitted: "It's a very difficult day. I've not been in a scoreline like that, certainly not as a manager.

"They were outstanding today Man City - there was no doubt about that. But if you gift them the goals we did today then it becomes very difficult to win any football match.

"We have a support that have travelled to Old Trafford in the week and have had to come back to Manchester for a game today and I feel for them because we were nowhere near good enough today."

Pressure

Norwich, who remain in the bottom three, next face a crunch clash with West Ham on November 9, live on Sky Sports.

And Hughton admits the visit of the Hammers has added pressure after their Man City mauling.

He added: "They are all big games but this one becomes a bigger one, not only because of the defeat today but because of the manner of the defeat today. It's at home and we need to start rectifying things and picking up points.

"We can only rectify it by working hard on the pitch. Whatever progress we feel we'd made in previous weeks on the ball, we've gone backwards in our work without the ball - gifting soft, soft goals.

"You come here and you know that you are going to conceded territorial possession because of the quality that they've got. They are going to probe you and going to test you from the first minute to the last but you have to be bigger and braver than we were today.

"Our task in the second half was not to concede and apart from one goal that was offside and a great goal by (Yaya) Toure the other goals were too easily given away and we're going to have to work very hard on the training pitch next week. It can happen against the quality of the opposition here but we're not used to it. At the moment it's hurting and we need to rectify it quickly."

Asked if he is still the right man for the job, Hughton replied: "As regards confidence in my own ability - absolutely. There aren't significant changes in terms of players from last season we just need to get the mentality together from last season.

"We have to take today's flak on the chin. I feel for the supporters."
