Leroy Fer: Settling into life at Carrow Road

The 23-year-old made the switch from FC Twente in the summer but has conceded he initially struggled to settle in at Carrow Road.

Fer has so far featured in 18 of the Canaries' 19 Premier League outings, scoring three goals, and admits he is slowly acclimatising to the English game.

At the time of Norwich's approach, Fer was playing in the European Under 21 Championship and insists the prospect of a move to the English top flight drowned out the misery of competition heartache.

"It has become a good year after all," he told Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad as he recalled the sequence of events.

"I know exactly when I first heard about the interest of Norwich City. I was on the bus in Israel.

"We had an undeserved loss in the semi-finals of the European Championship with Holland Under 21s against Italy.

"I had to cry. It was deathly quiet on the bus. Then my father called. Norwich City wanted to do business right away."

Depression

Fer concedes it was time for him to move on from the Eredivisie and, despite there being other offers on the table, the central midfielder claims a switch to Norwich was a no-brainer.

"I already knew I had to leave Enschede. Everton were also interested but they first had to sell Fellaini," he added.

"With the transfer from Feyenoord to FC Twente I already knew how tough it was if you have to wait for a deal."

The move to England is the first time Fer has plied his trade outside his native Netherlands and he confessed adjusting to life in the Premier League has been a steady process.

"The first months were very tough," he said. "Call it a form of depression. It has made me stronger and wiser.

"If you add and subtract everything, 2013 has become a good year. At least it has made me stronger.

"However, I would never be that open again as previously. Call that the price I have paid."
