Harry Redknapp's men made the perfect start to 2013 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, with their first fixture of the new calendar year seeing them secure a shock derby success.
Wright-Phillips proved to the match-winner against his former employers, with the England international having waited 55 games to get among the goals again.
He was understandably delighted to have played a leading role in what could be a priceless win for QPR, with just five points now separating the Premier League's bottom club from safety.
Wright-Phillips told Sky Sports: "It was a relief. Travelling away from home, we haven't been the best and have been dropping a lot of points. We had to consolidate and try to frustrate them, and I thought before I came on the team did well and after I came on we did better and tried to catch them on the break.
"We just believed that we were going to make a few more chances and one of them we had to take. That's what we tried to do."
Asked if QPR are capable of building on their derby victory and surging towards safety, Wright-Phillips added: "We never stopped believing that we could escape. We've always believed that since we ended up in this situation, and we still think that strongly.
"For confidence, if they (Chelsea) can struggle to break us down today, then a lot of teams will."
