Warnock defends QPR dealings

Neil Warnock has defended his QPR transfer dealings following criticism from the club's chairman Tony Fernandes.

Last Updated: 02/05/13 at 20:52 Post Comment

Following Rangers' promotion to the Premier League in 2011, Warnock eventually brought in several players including Joey Barton, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Anton Ferdinand.

Fernandes, who took a 66 per cent stake in QPR in August 2011, said: "We questioned a few of these but we weren't long in the business and we deferred to the footballing side."

But Warnock claims he had little option having not been able to sign players before Fernandes' arrival loosened the purse strings late in the transfer window.

"We had been promoted at the beginning of May and we couldn't sign a player. Other clubs - Swansea, Norwich - were signing players that I wanted to sign and gradually they were all gone," Warnock told Sky Sports News Radio.

"We were left having to sign players because if we had not we would have been left adrift by Christmas.

"So I agree with him in some respects in that we had to sign players we probably wouldn't have signed if things had happened weeks before."

Warnock was sacked on 8 January 2012 having not made any further transfers, a matter of further regret.

"I think if we had signed the players I wanted to sign at Christmas we would have consolidated. We would have built like Swansea and Norwich to some extent, that's the disappointment."
