Redknapp questions decision

QPR boss Harry Redknapp blasted referee Michael Naylor for failing to punish Wigan goalkeeper Lee Nicholls when he collided with substitute Andrew Johnson late on.

In a dour 0-0 draw with few chances at either end, the game's sole talking point drew Redknapp's ire after the final whistle.

With around 10 minutes to go, Johnson side-stepped the onrushing Nicholls before falling to the ground when moving away from goal, yet referee Naylor remained unmoved.

The contact appeared minimal and was outside of the box but that did not stop Redknapp hinting at his deep displeasure.

"The goalie only pushed him over, that's in the rules is it?" he said.

"You can do that, can you? Run out of the goal and push the striker over and not give a foul away? Must be a new game we're playing.

"I think the only person who didn't see it was the referee, wasn't it? How can you not see that?

"What's he fallen over for, Andy Johnson? He's took the ball around the keeper, he's surely not going to fall over unless he gets pushed over."

Chances were at a premium for both sides and Rangers' promotion credentials have been hampered in recent weeks due to a lack of cutting edge in front of goal.

Redknapp, however, is not concerned, adding: "I think we'll be OK. It's hard; I've just got Andy Johnson back, he's been out injured, Bobby Zamora's out, I've only had one striker so I've had no choice but to play one up there.

"I would say they've got a stronger squad than us, Wigan. I think they've got more strength and depth than we have, for sure."

Goals have been a problem for Latics too, this game the third straight Sky Bet Championship clash in which Owen Coyle's men have failed to find the target.

Yet Coyle, himself a former striker, insists a side boasting attacking threats such as Grant Holt, Nick Powell and Callum McManaman cannot be shut out for long.

He said: "We've got to keep making the chances, keep banging on the door in general and those goals are going to fly in. Someone's going to be on the end of those, for sure."

Coyle also thought referee Naylor was correct in his assessment to ignore Johnson and Rangers' protestations when the striker crumpled to the turf as Nicholls rushed out.

"I can understand Harry being annoyed," Coyle added.

"He's probably annoyed because if it's a decision QPR didn't get, it's the first they've not got all night.

"I've seen the incident back and Andy Johnson's a very clever player, a player I've liked for a number of years, but Lee Nicholls has actually shown his maturity because Lee's just stood and Andy being Andy looks for a bit of contact.

"But if you watch that back there's very little in that. The referee managed to get that one right."

ilarious, thanks for that. But if I may, I do suspect the reason of your partners' ire is not Tottenham, but most probably all the compusilve gambling :)
