Butland seeking Brazil ticket

Goalkeeper Jack Butland is refusing to rest in his pursuit of a place in England's squad for the World Cup in Brazil, and would be prepared to go back out on loan in the New Year.

The 20-year-old, who signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Premier League side Stoke in January, is currently plying his trade on loan with Barnsley in the Championship.

Butland was one of the stand-out performers as the struggling Championship outfit travelled to Elland Road and left with a point after a goalless draw with Leeds United.

The Tykes keeper denied Leeds striker Matt Smith from point-blank range before tipping Ross McCormack's second-half header over the bar to keep Barnsley in the game.

Barnsley's clash with Bolton at Oakwell on Boxing Day will be the final game of Butland's loan spell with the Tykes.

But the shot-stopper insists he will be forced to seek another switch should he not be offered first-team football upon his return to the Britannia Stadium.

"There is no point me sitting on the bench doing nothing," Butland told the Daily Star.

"My target when I joined Stoke was to play for them. We will have to see what pans out over January.

"If I'm not playing, then my main focus would be to get back out on loan."

Butland's desire to be on the field has extra fuel with England beginning their World Cup campaign in Brazil in just six months' time.

Having represented the Three Lions from Under 16 right to Under 21 level, Butland was awarded his senior debut by Roy Hodgson in 2012 and he is looking to cause selection headaches for the manager in 2014.

"In the back of my mind is the World Cup," he said.

"The higher level I am playing at, the more pressure I can put the manager under."

hould have stayed because we carried him for 6.5 years. And then he has a breakthrough season, and was gone soon after. MU fans, you would be as disgusted had C Ronaldo left in 2007 and not 2009.

ood grief. Someone guessed that the form English player at the moment might be in his national side with some other players? And that's espionage? Now if they discovered that Emile Heskey was going to be in the starting line up.... at right back.... THAT would be espionage. Give it a rest Roy.
