Jelavic exclusive

As Croatia prepare for the once-in-a-lifetime experience of kicking off a World Cup against hosts Brazil, we have spoken exclusively to Nikica Jelavic.

The striker will be swapping Hull for the samba spirit of Sao Paulo come the curtain-raiser on Thursday but he will also be looking to spoil the party.

Jelavic and Croatia are not planning on giving Brazil an easy ride in the five-time world champions' homeland but first he lets us in on his passion for the planet’s greatest sporting event.

MY WORLD CUP HERO IS...

"The Brazilian Ronaldo! He scored so many goals at the World Cup, 15, which is more than any other player. He was such a force and a lethal finisher; the all-round striker.”

THE GREATEST WORLD CUP MATCH I HAVE SEEN IS...

“The final in USA ’94 between Italy and Brazil. Roberto Baggio, who had been the best player at the tournament, with goals and assists, missed a penalty. He missed it badly and Brazil won the World Cup.”

THE WORLD CUP NEWCOMER I TIP TO BE A TOP PLAYER IS...

“Hopefully my fellow Croatian, Mateo Kovacic of Inter Milan. He is a great, great talent and has a big chance to show the world what he can do. He is very creative and can be an important player for Croatia at this World Cup and beyond.”

MY FIRST WORLD CUP MEMORY IS...

“Coming home from school and putting the TV on to watch the matches of USA ’94. I was only about eight years old but I remember Hristo Stoichkov, Gheorghe Hagi, Baggio and Romario. They were great players and it was a great World Cup.”

Nikica Jelavic wears the new Warrior Skreamer Pro. For more information go to warriorfootball.com or follow @WARRIOR_FTBL

wo things. First, I can't stop reading your name as 'Dane Bowers'. Second, you used the words 'philosophy' and 'Redknapp' in the same sentence.
