Brian McDermott: Says Reading game will be special for him

McDermott spent almost 13 years at Reading after initially joining the club as chief scout to Alan Pardew in 2000.

He took over as manager in December 2009 when Brendan Rodgers departed and spent almost three-and-a-half years in charge, guiding them to promotion to the Premier League in 2012.

He revealed his return to the Madjeski Stadium would be a special occasion and feels he can be proud of what he accomplished while at the club.

"It would be wrong of me to say that this game does not mean a lot to me, of course it does," he said.

"I spent such a large part of my football career at this football club [Reading] and the supporters were really good to me.

"The people around the club were really good to me and I did the best I could at the football club, day in and day out every day, so my conscience is clear as far as that is concerned and I think I made them a lot of money."

Current Reading manager Nigel Adkins is confident McDermott will get a good reception on his return and revealed his surprise when he first learned of his departure.

"He should get a good round of applause and a good welcome back to the Madejski Stadium," said Adkins.

"What he did here at Reading Football Club was phenomenal. He was a great servant and spent many, many years here.

"Obviously to get the club promoted into the Premier League was fantastic and I was shocked as anybody when I saw Brian's departure."
